Lyrical Love

Which lyric of praise and adoration has had the most impact on me over the years?

Was it from that hymn I woke up to hear Phillip singing to our first baby, just hours after he was born?
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound…

Was it a line from that hymn that gave Phillip the strength to face his cancer?
All I have needed, thy hand hath provided…

Was it from that hymn we sang at our wedding?
Lord of all, to Thee we raise, This our hymn of grateful praise
For the joy of human love…

Was it that Nichole Nordeman favorite which captured my love of the church so poetically?
‘Cause somebody somewhere decided we’d be better off divided.
And somehow, despite the damage done, He says, “Come”

Was it from that one I learned during those transforming summers of mission work when I was taken out of the miry clay and put on solid ground?
You are Lord of Lords, you are King of Kings, you are Mighty God, Lord of everything…

Was it from that hymn we sang during chapel every morning at St. Catherine’s?
Morning has broken, like the first morning…

Was it from the one I learned was especially meaningful to my grandfather when he returned from World War II?
Then sings my soul, my savior God to thee,
How Great Thou Art,
How Great Thou Art

Was it from the little song I can still hear my mom teaching me to sing?
Allelu, Allelu, Allelu, Alleluia…Praise be the Lord!

No, it was from none of those.

Rather, the lyric that touches me most is from the tune He began singing in my heart the day He created me. It’s the lyric that gives meaning to all the others. It’s the one I hear whispered to me under the melody of every hymn and song of praise I have ever learned and loved. It is the one that causes my heart to burn within me. It is the lyric that calls me into His arms and bids me sing along.

That’s my favorite.

Amen.
