I
have to admit, when I heard that Desire was one of our themes my first thought
was the U2 song. My next was a book by
John Eldredge that, sadly, I started but have not finished. Then my brain sort of stopped, so I opened
the dictionary.
Desire: A noun meaning longing, craving; a verb
meaning to long or hope for.
For
me there is a connotation of depth, of desire originating in the primal fabric our
hearts. Our wants are surface things,
our needs deeper, and desires deepest of all.
We can consciously rationalize and
even explain our wants and needs, but our desires can defy reason, logic, and explanation.
Where
does desire come from? What are we
supposed to do with it? Embrace it? Ignore it? I think we will find our answers
if we look not in songs, books or dictionaries, but in the Bible. My prayer is that by the end of the week we
will come into a greater understanding of the mystery and power of Desire.
