I’m
sure we all know by now, if there’s one thing The Grinch hates, it’s The Noise
Noise Noise NOISE!
I
am not a Grinch, but I also hate all The Noise Noise Noise NOISE!
Not
so much the noise from jing-tinglers and floo-floobers and tartinkas. Not even from the clamor of arguing siblings
or the deafening silence of a pouting teenager.
The
noise I hate is the noise of my own heart.
It’s
the noise of unmet expectations, of fear that they’re only pretending to like
their gifts, of not putting as much emphasis on The Christ Child and My Fellow
Man as I should.
Do
you know what I have discovered silences The Noise Noise Noise NOISE?
Love.
Love
covers over a multitude of unmet expectations.
Love keeps no record of who got the better gift, or the worst. Love perseveres in the painfully slow transformation
to selflessness.
And
this Love is always with us, even through all the noise of Christmas. We just have to take some time to be still
and quiet, then pray and LISTEN.
Love
isn’t hard to hear when you’re listening for it.
Wait! What’s that?
Do you hear what I hear?
Love is what's in the room with you at
Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. ~Author unknown, attributed to a 7-year-old named
