Remembering Wisdom (a repost)

Sometimes I think of the book of Proverbs as a quaint stone cottage in a pleasant little field, dappled with wildflowers.  No, really.  I mean, it's kind of adorable, right? It's full of little quips and snip-its of wisdom.  Its multitude of one-liners make for a quick read and with thirty-one chapters, it makes a pretty perfect daily devotional - one you could repeat every month.

Poor Proverbs.  How often I misjudge you. When I'm looking for a book to hang out with, I admit, I'm more inclined to march my way to the powerhouse of Romans, the intrigue of Isaiah, or the foundation of John.  So often you're just that little book of fun sayings to me.

But the truth is, Proverbs, you are so much more.  You are precious. You are priceless.

In a season of history when God wasn't talking to everyone, He spoke to Solomon.  God gave Solomon the ultimate blank check when He asked Him in a dream, "What do you want?"
Solomon response?
 "Wisdom."

So precious, so priceless was this wisdom that "all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind." 2 Chronicles 9:23

Sometimes I need to remind myself that the unassuming little book in the middle of my Bible is full of directives from heaven - information kings of Solomon's day considered of the upmost value.  I'm sure those kings (and queens, we can't forget Sheba) would have given a great deal to simply pick a book up from their night stand, flip several pages and find the wisdom we see when we dive into Proverbs. As a member of the new royal family through Christ, perhaps I will take my cue from my favorite Proverb:

"It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out" Proverbs 25:2

May we continue to seek out the wisdom of God hidden in His Word and may we appreciate the treasures Solomon left us while considering what wisdom God has given each of us to pass onto the next generation.
