Here’s the thing about 2013. I
am excited about it. I am probably more excited about 2013 than I have been
about many other new years in recent memory. Mind you, aside from my 20-year
High School Reunion, there is no specific event that has captured my attention
for the upcoming year. So why am I excited about 2013?
Because 2012 was different.
I picked up a book last January
that changed the way I looked at setting goals and dreaming. About a year ago
this time, not unlike many of us, I sat down and wrote out ten goals. I made
significant progress on six of them. SIX. If you are a “glass is half full”
kinda person, you will be celebrating with me in my victory. Six is a great
number. It is a higher success rate than I can ever remember accomplishing on
any other list of resolutions in recent years.
Did I meet all of my goals? No.
But I learned enough, I think, about what it will take to meet all of my goals
for 2013. I figured out how to do it. I figured out how to truly live my days
by the priorities that have been in my heart of hearts all along. In 2012, I got better at living into the person God created me to be.
I am starting 2013 smaller and fitter
than I was in January of 2012. My garage is significantly cleaner. I have a
real chance of being completely debt-free by December (of car loan, student
loan, credit cards…everything). I have managed to settle in to a satisfying
schedule of keeping my house clean, an accomplishment which has alluded me for
years (I hate housework). Those are just a few of the symptoms of a change that is stirring within me below the surface of my life.
I feel like I am uncovering someone
God dreamt up a long time ago.
In 2013, that someone is
going to be unstoppable. It feels
like grace. It feels like dawn. It feels like it’s time to rise and shine.
I am excited about 2013. Are you?
This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. - Ephesians 5:14-16
