Always Connected: Follow Me

Daily Fast FuelI have quite a few Twitter followers. Only a handful of them actually know me personally, yet they each decided to click that little green button and commit to following little ‘ole me. I am not sure exactly why. I suppose there could be a number of explanations. Am I interesting? Do they like my blog? Do they want to sell me something  or do they just have a lot of time on their hands? I suspect that many of them choose to follow because they see some advantage for themselves—you know that old acronym, WIFM. Regardless of their reasons, it’s one more indication that our sense of connection has taken a turn in the wrong direction.

Consider how we looked at the word “follow” before the existence of Twitter. It essentially meant you go in front of me and I’ll walk behind because you’re going somewhere (or you’ve been somewhere) that I’d like to be. Now it means I’ll add myself to the group of people who track your activity, occasionally laugh at your jokes and pass your witty quotes on to others. A phrase that once carried real weight is now a fad of pop culture. It’s just one more phrase we, unfortunately, take way too lightly.

So, here I am with another word of caution. The concept of following is major for believers. Following Jesus requires our sacrifice, our self-denial and shouldering a cross (Matthew 16:24). There’s nothing  light and fluffy about this real-life commitment that is the only way to real life. Don’t let the nature of twitter (or any other social media) creep in and influence how you follow the Lord. He deserves and, dare I say, requires so much more. I, on the other hand, can be followed @anitra or @anitrasays. Connect with me on Twitter and lets talk a little more about connecting!

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” John 10:27

Always Connected: Let's Be Friends

Daily Fast FuelUnread Message: Jesus wants to be friends on Facebook!

That’s an email you’ll never see. Jesus definitely wants to be your friend, but status updates on your wall or a tag in your photo album could never be enough. I’d venture to say He’d never be satisfied to be one of the many friends who peruse your posts since He wants to be THE one friend you live to pursue. We’d never build a relationship with Him based on those kinds of cursory encounters. A real connection requires our commitment, our attention and our time.

We have to be careful. It could be very easy for us to buy into the notion that friends are people we barely know, barely remember, barely see or barely got along with when we did see them. We have adapted to such a loose definition of the term “friend,” that I fear it will begin to shape our real life friendships and foster an even lazier approach to building relationships. If we are to stay connected to Jesus (and the important people in our lives), the Facebook approach to friendship will never do. So, let’s do better than the quick hello, the 60 second chat (or the obligatory Facebook birthday wishes) and put in the effort required to stay connected to all our friends, especially the friend who showed His commitment by laying down His life.
“So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend...” Exodus 33:11

Always Connected: Call Me

MP900422388[1]I am not a phone person, and although I have friends and family who are, they know that if they want to reach me, it’s better to text, email or send a telegram. They’ve realized that, although I love them, the odds of me calling or picking up my ringing phone are slim.  And thankfully, no one complains (except for my Grandma who always says I should call more often).

But, enough about me.

In fact, I only give you this little glimpse into my psyche to emphasize just how differently Jesus sees things. Unlike me, he’s really into calling, and longs to hear from us at any given moment. As you work on strengthening your connection this week, remind yourself of His willingness to answer whenever you call. Chew on the verses below, and if you ever need me, I’m just an email away.

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” Psalm 50:15

"It shall come to pass That before they call, I will answer; And while they are still speaking, I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24

(Here’s a little something for your to-go box: Psalm 20:6, Psalm 65:5, Psalm 86:5, Isaiah 55:6)

“The Lord will hear when I call to Him.” Psalm 4:3

Always Connected: You've Got Mail

Daily Fast FuelI have three email addresses. I check them every day, multiple times each day and I don’t need a chime or a “you’ve got mail” to remind me. I’m a bit obsessed with making sure I don’t miss anything (that next email could just change my life!) and though there’s rarely anything extremely pressing, I’m always on the look out for the next message.

A few weeks ago, it occurred to me that this obsession was getting ridiculous. I’d been misdirecting some perfectly good expectation, and maybe I was missing out. Now, the idea of quitting cold-turkey was out of the question (you’ll understand that if you’ve ever tried to kick a coffee habit), but a light-bulb moment had me wondering what would happen if I read my Bible each time I checked my email.

It’s an ongoing experiment, so let’s not talk about how I’m doing. I don’t want that to distract you from the point I’m making about becoming obsessed with reading the Word and staying connected to the Father. He’s crafted the greatest message of love and acceptance and awaits us with a fresh revelation of that message each time we choose to read it. If we were to approach His message with the same expectation we have when checking our email, I’m certain something remarkable would happen.

Here’s the bottom line: those updates, chain letters and sales pitches will keep coming, but it’s the message of the cross that will keep us going. Consider that the next time you check your email and feel free to forward this to ten people in the next 24 hours.

“…for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day…” Acts 17:11 NIV

Always Connected: Subscribe to My Feed

Daily Fast Fuel
You’ll see the word “subscribe” plastered all over our blog because we want you to stay connected. We’re hoping you’ll add our site to the list of blogs you read regularly, and if you do that by accessing feeds in a reader, we want to be on your list.

(Unfamiliar with the terms “feed” and “reader”?  Simply put, a feed delivers our updates directly to you and a reader is the tool that allows you to read them.)

We’re really into feeding you around here, so we’re thrilled when someone subscribes to our feed. It’s just one more way we give you access to your daily fuel, but it’s His feed we’re really here to shamelessly plug.  Our updates should serve to whet your appetite and prepare you for the feast He’s prepared for you each day, and if this is all you’re eating, you won’t survive for very long.

Those who feed on the Bread of Life will live because of Him (John 6:57). That’s a promise no other feed can offer and a result no other feed should be expected to give. He, himself, is the feed. You are the reader. Looking for the “subscribe here” button? You’ll find it when you open your Bible.

“He will feed his flock like a shepherd…” Isaiah 40:11

Always Connected

Daily Fast FuelI am very rarely unplugged. There is a corner in our home where little green lights are always flashing. I have a phone that’s smart enough to call, email, text and surf, and  I’m a thumb or index finger away from reaching anyone anywhere at any given time.

I am always connected.

I’m a poster child for the digital age and I like it. There’s something so powerful about knowing I’m a click, call or email away from reaching  a loved one, getting information, picking up the latest Groupon or sharing my thoughts with all of you. I understand that being connected shrinks the distance between me and the “uttermost parts of the world.” I also understand that being this digitally connected often jeopardizes the divine connectedness that powers my life. It’s that thought that drives me as I connect with you this week. So, plug in and log on as we explore the power of being always connected.

“Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live…” Isaiah 55:3
