Walking on Water: What They Don’t Tell You (But I’m Sure Peter Will)

Yes, “they” are right.  Stepping out of the boat, walking on the waves, with the wind growling and sea convulsing, is really scary.  Extremely difficult.  Learning curves, comfort zones, the unfamiliar and unknown—it will require all you’ve got and more.

But that’s not the whole story.

When I get to Heaven I fully intend to ask Peter about his infamous sojourn on the sea, and I’m pretty sure I know one thing he will tell me.
Walking on water is FUN.

Far too often we focus on the scary and stop there.  Yes, I’m sure Peter regretted how things turned out, but perhaps it wasn’t as much about disappointing Jesus as it was missing out on the fun, the exhilaration, the joy.

Peter didn’t realize it at the time, but he wasn’t in any danger of drowning.  Zilch.  Zero.  Nada.  Jesus was RIGHT THERE.  Never leaving him.  Never forsaking him.  In fact, Jesus INVITED Peter to JOIN Him there.  What place on earth could be any safer?

What project are you hesitating to pursue?  What dream do you have that seems impossible?  What is the very last thing you can ever see yourself doing?  If you would have asked me twenty-some years ago I would have said I could never see myself living on a farm, playing drums, kayaking, making films or having a passion for writing.

But you know what?  All of those Jesus-invited “impossibilities” bring me more joy, more purpose, more growth, more LIFE, than I ever could have imagined.  Make no mistake—they are extremely challenging. They are opposed.  They will not look the way you expect.  But they.  Are.  FUN.

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him," isn’t just about Heaven—it’s about now, too.  It’s about keeping our focus on Jesus.  It’s about one step at a time.  The only way we can drown is to let go.

Or to not take that first step.

Jesus is inviting you.  Come on in.  The water is fine.
