I Love Them, I Love Me Not
A
funny thing is happening as I continue to read the Bible—my heart is expanding.
Don’t
get me wrong, I’m still plenty selfish, self-centered, self-protecting, overly-self-aware,
and of-course-it’s-all-about-ME-ish. There just somehow seems to be a bit more
room for other people.
Naturally,
this means my chances of being hurt are expanding as well. I really don’t like
that part.
I
especially don’t like it because the more I find myself hurt over something,
the more I am realizing that I do The. Exact. Same. Thing. To. Other. People.
You
may begin engraving my name on the Hypocrite of the Year Award.
How
dare they? Now I know. How could they? Yep, that too. How can she be so blind
to the damage she is causing? God is taking my blinders off a little at a time
(I think that’s all my heart can bear).
I
am learning, but it’s not a 101 I’m enjoying. There is no spring in my step.
Not. Even. Close. Do you see those two long troughs in the dirt? My dug-in
heels are making those.
But,
I know if I want to become the woman God intends me to be, it has to be done.
By me.
But
also by God. I can’t change, but He can change me. I can’t grow, but He can
grow me. I just have to let Him.
If
you hear some whining and crying, don’t worry, it’s just God removing the plank
in my eye.

Springs in My Shoes
I may be looking for opportunities to Spring Clean and get ready for Spring Planting.
But I’ll be honest. I have NOT had a spring in my step lately. Not at all. Instead, I have been walking around feeling like I am trudging through mud.
No matter how much sleep I have had, I wake up tired.
No matter how busy or lazy my day, I walk through it tired.
Almost as soon as I get my kids in bed and shut off their light, I am tempted to (and sometimes do) climb into my own bed, pull the covers up and call it a “day”.
This chick ain’t springing anywhere.
And so, I am getting back to basics with my health. More water. MANY more vegetables. More iron. Basics.
I think we can all get spiritually tiiiiired, too. Can I get an amen? I sure did about three years ago. That’s when I retired from full-time youth ministry. I came to this decision for several reasons, though my exhaustion spoke pretty loudly in favor of a step back.
People used to ask me, “What hours do you work?” And I would respond, as you can image, “All of them.” There is no “off” time in ministry. Not really. And so with the arrival of my second son, and the shifting winds of change blowing through my home, I decided it was time to retire. At least for the foreseeable future.
I have happily spent the last few years getting back to basics. I get to spend time reading my Bible for me...not necessarily in preparation for leading a study. There is a BIG difference, and enormous freedom in this. I get to worship with my family (and actually sit next to them) and not worry about all the necessary intricacies of leading the service. I get to explore prayer that is just between God and me.
You might say, “But Katie, could you not have done most of those things while you were a Youth Minister?”
Sure, I could have.
But I got tired. Super tired. And somewhere in my exhaustion, I lost my focus on the basics.
The basics of our faith are as primary to us as water and good nutrition. If we don’t have it, we will become weary. We will lack the fuel to do what we are called to do.
So, for those of you who recognize Lent, I’m right there with ya. Let us use this time to re-focus on the basics, and get some REST.
As Easter approaches, may your heart, therefore, feel a little more spring in its step.
Amen.

Spring Leaning
7:04 a.m. Monday morning. I turn to view my alarm clock and immediately fly out of bed. Didn't I set two alarms?! Jumping out of the house, my 2 a.m. bedtime is hitting hard as I run through the list of things I need to do before the students show up for class. God and I are chatting about the unlikelihood of him replacing my daily dose of 24 hours with 72. I plead with Him - but then I could actually get it all done, Lord, the oil changes, the laundry, the dishes, the bills, the report cards from this weekend. I have choice words for Him concerning Daylight Savings.
7:40 a.m. Could be worse, at least I have a few moments to settle in; students will be at my door in ten minutes. A call from the office requests my presence at the All-School Worship time that started ten minutes ago (That was today?!). The principal would like you to lead a song. Hmm. This will be interesting with my music and my guitar at home.
7:50 a.m. After a desperate search for music, I scrounged up one song and figured the junior high girl who plays guitar for her team wouldn't mind me borrowing hers. Make my way sheepishly to the gym. Imagine large ACME signs surrounding me that say "Teacher who's late", "Teacher who forgot", "Teacher who'd give her right arm for a cup of coffee."
8:00 a.m. Worship team has rendezvous on stage, we have game plan. I try to convince myself I'm awake. Jesus, a little help.
8:05 a.m. Begin our one song selection which the younger kids know. Didn't have music for that one so I'm making chords up as I go, strum is completely off and did not bring a pick. Hang nail catches on strings. Finger now bleeding all over sweet junior high girl's guitar.
Bloody, broken, worship. Sometimes it's all you got.
Been there?

It's funny how sometimes "springing forward" is preceded by what feels like "pulling back." One of our students last week had a picture of a arrow being pulled back in a bow - the arrow appears to be taking steps backward, but in reality it's getting into position to be launched. It's a common Kingdom tale - Joseph went to prison before rising to power, David was a shepherd before he was a King, Abraham and Sarah were barren before God chose them to be His special family, Peter denied, and even Jesus himself was crucified. Bloody, broken worship.
I am reminded again today of God's sweet grace, that takes me at my worst, shows me how to depend on the Father, and then uses my rough moments to prepare me to be a dreamer - one who leans on my beloved and perseveres.
If you are finding yourself tripping up as we spring forward, rest in Christ. He may just be positioning you (an arrow in his quiver) to be launched.
"But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:9-11

Spring Forward
Spring
in our step. Spring in our smile. Spring in our hearts.
Hmmm…
Spring in our hearts. Could there be a little dream in there, tucked away for a
“better” time to spring forth into reality?
What
better time could there be than today, than right now?
So,
Spring Up! Spring Forward! Let’s spring into action on those projects, people, and
dreams, those special things that God has laid on our hearts!
You
know you’ve got some. We Daily Fast Fuel gals do, too. We’ll rustle up some
lemonade (I think it’s behind the hot chocolate) and encourage us all to Spring
into Action on our God-laid plans.
