Prophets of old were sent to prompt this self-examining
question from within us. Back in the day, when God’s people started going
wonky, a prophet would show up with words from the Lord to remind the tribe
what God was expecting from them. God’s people had a habit of forgetting.
We still forget. And the million-and-one-dollar question is,
“Do folks still ask what God requires of them?”
Perhaps.
But I think, at times, when we DO ask, we get lost in the “do
this, not that” tendencies of our faith. We forget to leave a little room for
mystery. God's love is so elaborate, how can we fully conceive of how we are required to respond to Him?
That’s why I dig Micah.
He attempted to break this down and make it simple.
“He has shown you, O
man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of YOU? To act justly and to
love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
I like simple.
Love the one in front of you. Start there.
Amen.
