Except
for a little stint in second grade when I took organ lessons (don’t ask), I
have never thought I had any musical ability.
I love to dance and I’ve always enjoyed good lyrics, but the music
itself wasn’t something I felt connected to.
I certainly was moved by and appreciated music, but I felt removed from
it.
Fast
forward to Christmas 2009 when I discovered I have a passion and a talent for
playing drums. Since then I’ve been
learning to hear music in a whole new way.
Move Along by The All-American Rejects is the first song that appealed to both the
writer and the drummer in me. I love the
message of the song, encouragement to keep moving forward through pain and
hopelessness. It also reminds me of the
quote, “When you’re going through hell, keep going.” (Winston Churchill)
When
I get overwhelmed I tend to paralyze and shut down. The chorus is easy for me to remember and
sing to myself, encouraging me to move and deal with things one at a time, in
the moment, rather than just stare slack-jawed at the behemoth and try to hide.
And
it’s REALLY fun to play this song on drums.
The coordination I needed for the drum pattern that starts the song took
me a bit to get, but now I have it and, in my opinion, I totally rock it. ;)
As
a bonus, the video appeals to my inner filmmaker. The concept and flawless execution in the filming,
directing and editing (not to mention the sheer patience of the lead singer)
are inspiring.
“When
all you’ve got to keep is strong
Move
along, move along, like I know you’ll do
And
even when your hope is gone
Move
along, move along, just to make it through
Move
along.”
