June Word Association: Bride

We’re doing a little word association here at Daily Fast Fuel for the month of June. This week we will muse over the word BRIDE. Scripture tells us that “bride” is used to describe us for Christ, whether individually or as a whole – The Church.

Consider this your invitation to join us every day as we write about what being a BRIDE means to us! No need to RSVP or bring gifts. We’ll hold space for you.

The Newborn

"Am I doing this right? It just feels like she's always wanting to eat!"

"I can't get any rest. I can never put him down."

Insatiable, vulnerable, newness. This new life is so different from the protective covering of darkness. Fragile and naked, seeking comfort of loving arms every minute of the day.

Many of us can relate to those days. Some, not so much.

But I'm not talking about the physical birth of a baby. I'm telling you what it is like for the birth of many infant Christians and it was certainly that way for me!

My transformation was night and day, literally and figuratively. I drowned in a river of repentance one night and rose a completely new creature. Nobody knew what hit them, neither did I!

I was insatiable. Couldn't get enough Jesus to keep me calm. Every waking moment I needed Him. I listened to sermons all day long at work. The moment I got home, I listened to more. I found Christian music to be of great comfort and I couldn't go to sleep without diving into His Book and talking to Him in prayer.

I was an infant in the truest sense of the word. I relied on everyone else.

Thankfully it didn't last too long, maybe a year, because nobody can keep that kind of pace. We're not meant to.

Scripture says --
"… For everyone who continues to feed on milk is obviously inexperienced and unskilled in the doctrine of righteousness (of conformity to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action), for he is a mere infant [not able to talk yet]!..." Heb 5:12-14 AMP

Just like an infant child, I wasn't meant to stay carried around and be fed by others. I got up and learned to feed myself with the Word's life giving Bread. I drank in its freshness so I wouldn't thirst.

Although I still struggle in my walk sometimes, I know now where to go to find what brings life and power and victory.

How do you feed yourself? I'd love it if you'd share with me.

Remind Me Again?

Practically every day I have to remind our children to turn off the lights or brush their teeth or pick up after themselves. Really? Again? Yes. And we are the same too.

I’ve heard it said, "People often need reminders more than they need instruction". Scripture tells us time and time again to "remember" what the Lord has done and we have numerous examples of places dedicated after God came through on a promise or provided in a time of hardship. I imagine them like pictures on a wall or a birthday calendar on my phone. They are reminders to be thankful, to celebrate.

My favorite account of the Israelites making a memorial is found in Joshua 4. I enjoy it for the sheer brilliance of God's request. As the Israelites were crossing the river Jordan on dry land, just as they had crossed the Red Sea, one representative from each of the twelve tribes had to pick up a stone from the middle of the river and carry them over.

What I know about any stones under a current of water is that they are smooth like glass. The twelve stones carried over would have been no different and would have certainly stood out like a sore thumb in the midst of the harsh terrain. Can you imagine the sight? Twelve highly polished river stones randomly sitting in a neat pattern, seemingly out of nowhere?

And that is exactly where scripture takes us, "in the future when our descendants ask their fathers 'what do these stones mean?' tell them,". God intended the future generations to be told and encouraged. He knew days would come when they would feel far from Him and they would need reminders. He knew you and I would one day need these accounts to remember the God of yesterday is the same God of today. He knew our children would need to see us remembering and celebrating because he is the God of the future too. He is the God of our children.

I’m purposing this Thanksgiving to tell our children of those polished stones. How about you?
