The Voice of Water
You’re standing in a field of grass. It’s dark all around
you but it’s not night. You can see the occasional ray of light through…what it
is? Plastic? Yes, it’s plastic. Big, full, black garbage bags surround you,
swirling and smelly.
A voice says, “Drop them. Go on. It’s okay.” You didn’t
realize you were the one swirling the bags. You are startled and one bag drops.
Then another. You take as deep a breath as you can, hold it, and then you let
them all drop.
Suddenly you see, really see, the emerald green grass. The flowers,
my goodness, the flowers are everywhere and unbelievable. There is light and
you realize you are not squinting. As magnificent as the light is, it does not
hurt your eyes.
You look around and you see him. Him. You are not so taken aback by His beauty or
majesty as you are by the fact that He is not scowling at you. You figured He
would be, should be, disappointed in all of the bad decisions you’ve made and
the pain you’ve caused. Part of you simply can’t get used to the fact of His
smile. The other part of you wants to run.
“Don’t listen,” He says in the voice of water flowing over
smooth rock. “Don’t run. I would love you to stay.”
It’s the “love you” that catches. He says it gently--not
pleading but rather offering. You find that you really do want to stay, and so you
sit down on a rock that somehow isn’t hard at all.
It is glorious to sit and be, and you realize how weary you
are. Running does that to you. Striving and surviving and seeking relief, any
relief. And you are surprised to realize you have found more than relief. Here. With Him.
He is as close as your heartbeat. He is as soft as whisper. He
is Love. And you’re not one hundred percent sure, but this place, but He
Himself, is growing on you. Growing inside you. Welling up to life. Swelling to
Life.
And you realize you are Home.

Somewhere Between a Bow and a Hug
When you want to get in tune with the heartbeat of another, you have to get in close enough to hear it first.
Imagine God is standing before you...all human-looking. (no bright lights on thrones in this vision, okay?)
He invites you to tune your heart, your very life, in sync with his heart. If you want to hear his heart, you must...
Stop Talking.
Quiet Down.
Lean your head down so that it is close to his heart. (Totally okay if you call this a “bow”.)
Wrap at least one arm around him so that you can hold your ear near to his heart. (Hug.)
Listen.
Relax.
Don’t ever let go.
Somewhere between a bow and a hug, between reverence and embrace, that is where you will find his heartbeat, the one that won’t ever let you go. That is where you will find Jesus.

Love Strikes
Jonah didn't have chance.
He tried pretty hard to RUN from God's heart, but three days in a fish can do a turn on a man.
God had a thing for the people of Ninevah. And Jonah, whether he liked it or not, was on a collision course with the heart of God. He was created to move to its rhythm. He was created to be in partnership with God's heart - with His love for people.

He is joined by a whole host of misfits, kings, and ragamuffin messengers who were apprehended by the cadence of a new life.
And they simply set a precedent for the rest of us.
You were created to be apprehended, to be moved by God's love and compelled to love others. Our stories begin wherever our feet tread - at the breakfast table, the grocery line, the cubicle. But what God is orchestrating through our small strikes of love is a beat heard round the world - the sound of His love chasing us all down.
The answer to "what am I supposed to do with my life?" is simple.
You are meant to love Him and love the ones He puts in front of you.
Today, I pray as you lean into the places God has for you to walk, may you hear His heart beating clearly, "so that the world may know that You sent [Christ], and loved [us] even as you loved [Him]." (John 17:23)
