Depression Detonator

“My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.” Psalm 119: 28
It’s not a matter of if we deal with depression. We all will and do at some point in our lives. I remember the “Ok, I get it” moment God spoke to me. It was a couple months after my daughter passed away. I finally got up the nerve to enter her room, then to actually sit in the rocking chair—our rocking chair—that encapsulated our short “mother/ daughter” time together. It didn’t take long for the D word to begin to pull me down. Tears soaked my blouse; groans bellowed up from beyond the pit of my stomach. The “why, Lord, just tell me why” began, again. That’s when the loving wisdom of my Father freed me.
“Lezlie, depression is no more than an emotion, and I created all emotions. It’s not about feeling depressed. It’s about what you are going to DO when you get depressed. You have two choices here. Continue to wallow and sink deeper into the abyss of self-pity, or GET UP and say good-bye.”
That tough love lesson rang true once again June 2013. Death didn’t knock, no, that sting was gone. This time it was drugs, but not for the first time. Drugs had already stolen years from one of my sons (but only for a decade!) Now drugs came again, no, not just again, but back. Back to haunt yet another of my sons—for the second time in his life.
“That’s it God, I already did this, I can’t do it again.”
“I know you can’t. Let me.”(And when my son cried out, God answered him, again!)
My depression lasted longer this time, but it didn’t defeat me. God’s word is living, true, and freeing. It is “new every morning.” It is the detonator needed to bust through, apart, and thoroughly destroy anything that tries to rob us from the joy of the knowledge of eternity.
“In my anguish I cried to the LORD and he answered by setting me free.” (Psalm 118:5)
Do you want freedom from depression? Open the pages of the one book that has lasted the longest throughout history. Allow His words to detonate the lies of the destroyer as He restores your soul with truth.

Fly Free

My daughter and I join the task of Monarch butterfly

conservation every summer. We eagerly await the

arrival of our first egg laying female and quickly

harvest her eggs off our milkweed patch to protect

them from predators. We then house the hungry

caterpillars, feed, clean their cages daily, take notations on their progress an

number the butterfly releases. It's a big job!

The most exciting time for us is during the Fall when the yellow, orange and red

leaves of trees collide with a brilliant blue backdrop of the sky. The change of

season means that all our emerging Monarch butterflies, with their own brilliant

display of Fall colors, will be making their long journey to the overwintering

grounds in Mexico.

Last week we had three butterflies emerge right before a cold front blew through.

Not only did we have to keep them sheltered from heavy rain and high winds but

also had to prepare a daily mix of honey water to keep them fed and hydrated. We

kept a close eye on the weather to wait for an opportunity to release.

Today was the day! We were thrilled to see those butterflies take flight. We had

put so much time and effort in caring for them yet we knew they were meant for so

much more. They were created to fly free!

And so it is with us. We can become entrapped and enslaved to sin, prisoners in

chains that keep us from being the person God created us to be. We may feel

comfortable in our current situation but like our Monarch butterflies, unless we

are set free eventually it is a death sentence. Paul wrote "We know that our old

life died with Christ on the cross so that our sinful selves would have no power

over us and we would not be slaves to sin" Rom 6:6 (NCV)

Reap the gift of freedom through repentance. Jesus can break the power of sin in

our lives. Creator God is ready to cheer on our flight. Let's drop these chains

and like the Monarch, fly free!

Unlocked

MP900315509[1]What doors would unlock in your life if you truly believed—believed the resurrection, believed the Father’s love, believed His divine power? How would you live once those doors were unlocked? How much could you accomplish? How much would things change?

This week, your DFF servers will be standing with you in front of those doors, picking locks, jiggling door knobs and helping you look for missing keys. Get ready to see those doors fling open as we lend our faith, send our prayers and share our thoughts on living life unlocked.

Promises

Freedom

My family and I were watching one of those shows where they nurse an animal to health and then release it back into the wild. As we watched, the animal hesitated the moment they let it go, as if it wasn't quite sure it was really free.
This is a perfect picture of how some Christians act, even though Jesus has purchased our freedom on the cross.  John 8:36 says "So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed."  It's a promise from God that if you'll receive His freedom, it's there for the taking!

However, you have to "walk" in that freedom, just like the animal released back into the wild had to walk away and go back to where it belonged.

Jesus set us free from sin, the curse of the law, condemnation, and a life of striving. If we're still in bondage in any area, it's not because freedom isn't available, it's because we haven't allowed God to be the Lord of that particular part of our lives.
