She was our first face-to-face encounter with the inhabitants of Whoville. She was young. She was innocent. She rocked that "top pony" hair-do. She was hopeful.
And when all seemed lost, she joined the congregation of Whos to sing songs of celebration despite the Grinch's best efforts to ruin Christmas.
Cindy and the rest of the Whos have special insight, I think, about the importance of celebration in the midst of adversity.
Even though marketing companies have flooded our screens, espousing this season of "peace, joy, hope, and love," there are many out there who have come to Christmas season with great sadness in their lives. They are walking through great losses. They are remembering great losses of Christmases past. They are fighting to be happy inside because every song or store shouts how this is the "most wonderful time of the year," and yet it doesn't feel true this time around.
There is something in the child-like wonder of Cindy Lou and her Whos that reminds me of the joy and peace that only Christ can bring. When Christmas seems to be ruined - there is still One in whom we can find our hope, joy, peace, and love. We still have reason to sing, to celebrate, to expect good things, because we serve a God who is no stranger to adversity - and walking straight through it to joy.
My prayer this Christmas for each of us is we would let Christ be the source of our comfort and joy.
Lord, would you help us to walk in wonder and hope. Remind us of your promises and your presence. Let us rejoice and sing again - for unto us a child was born - a gift was given!
"Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!" Psalm 96:1-3
