Power Beyond Measure

I don't recall the theater being particularly full.  A cartoon about Moses wasn't primed to be a box office hit, perhaps.  But I was captivated.  It might as well have been just me, the big screen and the Spirit of God churning something fierce.  I can whole heartedly say that God used the movie Prince of Egypt to change my life.

I was a teenager at the time and a church goer.   I was a Christian, but my relationship with God was pretty surfacy.  I didn't realize that there was so much more to having a relationship with God at the time.  My walk with the Lord pretty much looked like church on Sundays, remembering Jesus, and trying to be good. I rarely, if ever, picked up my Bible.  So when Moses started talking to God in a burning bush, that was a new one for me.

I sat in that theater completely enthralled at this scene where a man was speaking to God- where he could hear God's voice and respond.  When the water parted and the Israelites walked to freedom, I was in tears.  It wasn't so much the impressive animation or the inspiring musical score - it was the revelation that struck me about who my God was.  I serve a God of incomprehensible power.

I went home that night mesmerized by the thought of God.  Tucking myself into bed, I reached over and uncharacteristically grabbed my Bible.  I opened to the book of Exodus and read until I couldn't keep my eyes open.  I could not shake the thought that if my God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, then the God I serve today is still capable of parting seas and speaking through bushes.  I remember my fervent prayer that night - God, if this is who you are, I want to see you move like Moses did.

And so He has.  Every box I try to put Him in, in my journey of understanding who God is, eventually breaks.

I have discovered my God is powerful - He heals stage 4 cancer, comforts the mourning, multiplies food, cancels debt, releases joy, and introduces Himself to people through dreams.  His ways are mysterious, miraculous, and even odd at times.  God breaks the confines of human logic to love on His people.  And perhaps the most confounding fact about the power of God is He has entrusted it to work through His people, through His Spirit.

"Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways,
and how small a whisper do we hear of him!
But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

Job 26:14
